Concealed Hinges: Types & Installation Guide
Complete guide to concealed hinges (hidden hinges): cross-mounted, embedded, pivot, and clip-on types for industrial enclosures, clean rooms, and tamper-resistant cabinets. Opening angles, load ratings, and installation.
Quick Answer
A concealed hinge is completely invisible when the door is closed. Choose cross-mounted for standard enclosures, embedded (press-in) for thin panels, pivot type for heavy doors, or clip-on for tool-free installation. Benefits: clean aesthetics, tamper resistance, hygiene compliance. Limitation: lower load capacity than surface-mount hinges. Skip to the types comparison table.
1. What Is a Concealed Hinge?
Open any well-designed electrical enclosure, server rack, or medical equipment housing and look at the hinges. In premium products, you will not see them — because they are concealed. A concealed hinge mounts entirely within the gap between the door and frame, making it invisible from the exterior when the door is closed.
This design philosophy serves three engineering purposes beyond aesthetics:
- Tamper resistance — with no exposed hinge pin, an intruder cannot remove the door by driving out the pin. This is critical for electrical panels, security enclosures, and cash-handling equipment.
- Hygiene — surface-mount hinge knuckles trap dust, food particles, and bacteria. Concealed hinges eliminate exposed crevices, making the enclosure easier to clean and suitable for food processing and pharmaceutical environments.
- Sealing integrity — surface-mount hinges require screws through the enclosure wall, creating potential leak points. Concealed hinges mount inside the sealed envelope, preserving the enclosure’s IP rating.
Hengchieh manufactures 43 models of concealed hinges in zinc alloy, stainless steel, and engineering plastics, covering door weights from 5 kg to 80 kg.
2. Types of Concealed Hinges
| Type | Mounting | Opening | Load (per pair) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-Mounted | Screws through door edge | 90–180° | 20–50 kg | Standard enclosures, cabinets |
| Embedded (Press-In) | Press-fit into rectangular cutout | 90–135° | 10–30 kg | Thin panels, sheet metal doors |
| Pivot (Pin-Type) | Top/bottom pins into frame | 90–180° | 30–80 kg | Heavy enclosure doors, clean rooms |
| Clip-On (Snap-In) | Tool-free clip engagement | 90–120° | 10–25 kg | Quick assembly, mass production |
| European Cup (35mm) | 35mm cup boring | 90–175° | 15–30 kg | Furniture, kitchen cabinets |
| Mortise Concealed | Routed pocket in door/frame | 90–180° | 15–40 kg | Architectural, high security |
Cross-Mounted Concealed Hinges
The most common industrial concealed hinge type. Two leaves connected by a multi-link mechanism. One leaf screws to the door edge (cross-mounted), the other to the frame interior. When the door closes, the entire hinge folds into the gap between door and frame. Opening angles of 90–180° are standard. The multi-link mechanism ensures the pivot point shifts during opening, allowing the door to clear the frame edge without binding.
Embedded (Press-In) Concealed Hinges
Designed for sheet metal doors (1.0–2.5mm thickness) where edge-screwing is impractical. The hinge body is pressed into a rectangular cutout in the door panel and retained by spring clips or tabs that grip the panel edges. Quick to install in mass production — no drilling, no tapping, no screws. Ideal for thin-panel electrical enclosures, network racks, and vending machines.
Pivot Concealed Hinges
For heavy doors (30–80 kg) where the load capacity of cross-mounted or press-in types is insufficient. Pivot hinges use a vertical pin at the top and bottom of the door, with the weight supported entirely by the bottom pin’s thrust bearing. The top pin provides lateral stability. This distributes the door weight directly into the frame structure rather than through screws in the door edge. Used in clean rooms, pharmaceutical isolators, and heavy-duty enclosures.
3. Concealed vs Surface-Mount: When to Use Each
| Criteria | Concealed | Surface-Mount |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Invisible when closed | Knuckle visible |
| Tamper Resistance | High (no exposed pin) | Low (pin removable) |
| Max Load per Pair | 80 kg | 200+ kg |
| Installation | Moderate (precise alignment) | Easy (drill and screw) |
| Field Replacement | Difficult (concealed mounting) | Easy |
| IP Contribution | Positive (no wall penetration) | Negative (screw holes) |
| Cost | 1.5–3x surface hinge | Base |
| Hygiene | Excellent (no crevices) | Poor (knuckle traps debris) |
Decision rule: use concealed hinges when aesthetics, tamper resistance, or hygiene are requirements. Use surface-mount hinges when load capacity, easy installation, or cost are priorities. For a complete hinge type comparison, see our types of hinges guide.

5. Materials & Finishes
Concealed hinge material selection follows the same principles as all enclosure hardware:
- Zinc alloy (Zamak 3/5) — most economical, adequate for indoor applications, chrome or nickel finish. Good dimensional accuracy from die casting.
- 304 stainless steel — stamped leaves, suitable for general outdoor and food-contact environments. 500+ hours salt spray.
- 316 stainless steel — required for marine, coastal, and chemical environments. 1000+ hours salt spray. See our stainless steel hinge guide for detailed 304 vs 316 comparison.
- Glass-filled PA66 — non-conductive, non-corrosive, lightweight. Ideal for electronic enclosures where metal hinges could create ground faults. Limited to doors under 15 kg.
Hengchieh produces concealed hinges via zinc alloy die casting (complex shapes, high detail) and stainless steel stamping (flat leaves, formed links). Our die casting facility handles Zamak 3/5 and aluminum alloys with ±0.1mm dimensional tolerances.
6. Industrial Applications
Electrical Enclosures & Control Panels
UL 508A industrial control panels increasingly specify concealed hinges because they simplify IP rating compliance. With no hinge penetration through the enclosure wall, the gasket can run continuously around the door perimeter without interruption. Cross-mounted concealed hinges are standard on NEMA 12 and NEMA 4 panels for Siemens, ABB, and Schneider Electric enclosure systems.
Server Racks & Data Centers
Physical security is a top priority in data centers. Concealed hinges prevent unauthorized door removal — an attacker cannot reach the hinge mechanism from outside the rack. Combined with a multi-point locking system, concealed hinges create a tamper-resistant enclosure that meets data center security standards (SSAE 18 / SOC 2).
Medical & Pharmaceutical Equipment
FDA 21 CFR Part 211 and cGMP requirements mandate cleanable surfaces in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Concealed hinges with smooth, crevice-free profiles meet these requirements. For pharmaceutical isolators and laminar flow hoods, pivot-type concealed hinges in 316L stainless steel with electro-polished finish are the standard.
Vending Machines & Kiosks
Vandal resistance drives the use of concealed hinges in outdoor vending machines, ATMs, and kiosks. Without exposed hinges, the only attack vector is the lock itself — which can be hardened with anti-drill plates and reinforced strikers. Press-in concealed hinges are popular in vending because they snap into the sheet metal shell during assembly without screws.
7. Installation Guide
Cross-Mounted Installation
- Mark hinge positions — typically 100–150mm from top and bottom edges. For 3-hinge configurations, add a center hinge at the midpoint.
- Prepare door edge — drill and tap screw holes in the door edge (M4 or M5, depending on hinge model). For thin panels (<2mm), use self-clinching nuts instead of tapped holes.
- Mount door-side leaf — attach the hinge to the door edge using the specified screws. Verify the hinge is perpendicular to the door face.
- Position door on frame — hold the door in its closed position with the correct gap (typically 2–3mm between door and frame). Mark the frame-side screw positions.
- Mount frame-side leaf — drill, tap, and screw the frame leaf. Some models have slotted holes for ±2mm adjustment after initial mounting.
- Adjust and test — open and close the door through its full range. Check for binding, verify the door sits flush when closed, and confirm even gap around the perimeter.
Press-In Installation
- Punch or CNC-cut the rectangular cutout in the door panel to the specified dimensions (±0.3mm tolerance).
- Deburr the cutout edges to prevent gasket damage.
- Insert the hinge body into the cutout from the interior side.
- Push firmly until the retention clips snap over the panel edges. You should feel and hear a distinct “click.”
- Verify retention by pulling the hinge — it should resist 30–50N of pullout force.
8. Opening Angles & Door Clearance
| Opening Angle | Mechanism Type | Clearance Needed | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90° | Simple pivot or link | Door width + 10mm | Standard enclosures |
| 120° | Multi-link with offset pivot | Door width + 50mm | Equipment access |
| 135° | Multi-link, extended arc | Door width + 100mm | Wide service access |
| 180° | Double-link, shifted pivot | 2x door width | Full opening, pass-through |
The multi-link mechanism in concealed hinges shifts the pivot point during opening, which causes the door to swing outward (away from the frame edge) before rotating. This requires more clearance than a simple butt hinge. Always verify available clearance before specifying concealed hinges with opening angles over 90°.

FAQ
What is a concealed hinge?
A concealed hinge is completely invisible when the door is closed — all mechanical components are hidden between the door and frame. This provides clean aesthetics, tamper resistance (no exposed pin), and hygienic surfaces (no crevices for debris).
What is the difference between concealed hinges and European hinges?
European hinges (cup hinges) are a furniture-specific concealed hinge using a 35mm cup boring. Industrial concealed hinges use cross-mounted screws, press-in clips, or pivot pins — engineered for heavier doors, IP-rated enclosures, and security applications.
How much weight can concealed hinges support?
Standard models support 15–40 kg per pair. Heavy-duty models support 40–80 kg per pair. For doors over 50 kg, use 3+ hinges. The limiting factor is usually door material thickness at the mounting point.
Are concealed hinges better than surface-mount hinges?
Concealed hinges are better for aesthetics, tamper resistance, hygiene, and IP sealing. Surface-mount hinges are better for heavy doors (200+ kg capacity), easy installation, field replacement, and lower cost. Choose based on your priorities.
